Pace slows for monthly Kansas land auctions

FFMC - Wed Jul 15, 2:00AM CDT

Whether it’s through inheritance or as an investment, owning agricultural land is a part of many portfolios for one reason or another. And for nonfarmers who live off the farm and own or manage farmland, there can be many questions.

That’s why the Kansas State University Department of Agricultural Economics began its Kansas Landowner Conference four years ago. It’s tailored to those who own agricultural land in Kansas but may not reside on the property — or even in the state.

This year’s conference will be Nov. 10-11 at the K-State Alumni Center in Manhattan. Registration is now open. Those who attend will hear updates from K-State experts on U.S. agriculture economics, the outlook for Kansas farmers, Kansas land values and investment potential, estate planning, and more.

Across the state through the first week of July, the pace of Kansas farm ground auctions slowed. Agricultural land auctions, as reported by Kansas real estate firms, were few.

Here are recent land sales of note:

Reno County. A single tract of 150 acres of dryland southwest of Hutchinson sold at auction June 2 for $6,166.67 per acre. The seller was the William P. Haines Trust. Gene Francis & Associates handled the sale.

A single tract of 165 acres, 2 miles from Cheney Lake, with a blend of grass and hardwood timber and access to a paved road sold at auction May 12 for $3,675 per acre. The sellers were Michael L. and Diana Waggoner. Farmers National Co. handled the sale.

Jackson and Pottawatomie counties. About 350 acres of established pasture and hay ground south of Havensville sold in four tracts at auction May 20. Tract 1 was 158 acres of pasture, Tract 2 was 78 acres of hay ground, Tract 3 was 75 acres of pasture, and Tract 4 was 40 acres of hay ground. The average price across the four tracts was $5,851 per acre. The seller was the Kansas State University Charitable Real Estate Foundation. Farmers National Co. handled the sale.
