Crop progress: Soybean quality shifts slightly lower

USDA’s latest crop progress report, out Monday afternoon and covering the week through June 7, showcased a couple of minor changes for corn and soybean crop quality. In particular, soybean quality ratings eased a point lower. Corn quality also showed some small shifts, although the overall good-to-excellent ratings held steady. The 2025-26 winter wheat harvest also made some modest inroads this past week.

The 2026 corn planting season is nearly over, with 97% completion through Sunday versus 93% a week ago. That’s slightly ahead of 2025’s pace and the prior five-year average, both at 96%. Nearly all (86%) of the crop is now emerged, up from 76% last week and identical to both 2025’s pace and the prior five-year average.

Quality ratings showed 67% of the crop is still rated in good-to-excellent condition, but the G/E split moved from 57/10 last week to 55/12. Another 27% of the crop is rated fair (down one point from last week), with the remaining 6% rated poor or very poor (up one point from last week).

Soybean planting progress moved from 87% a week ago up to 92%. That’s still faster than 2025’s pace of 89% and the prior five-year average of 88%. Nearly four-fifths (79%) of the crop is now emerged, versus 65% in the prior week. That’s well ahead of 2025’s pace of 73% and the prior five-year average of 71%.

Soybean quality ratings degraded slightly, moving one point lower to 65% rated in good-to-excellent condition through June 7. Another 29% of the crop is rated fair (unchanged from last week), with the remaining 6% rated poor or very poor (up one point from last week).

Winter wheat quality ratings continued to decline, with just 25% of the crop now rated in good-to-excellent condition. Another 29% of the crop is rated fair (down one point from last week), with the remaining 46% rated poor or very poor (up two points from last week).

Physiologically, 92% of the crop is now headed, up from 87% in the prior week and staying moderately ahead of the prior five-year average of 85%. Harvest progress improved from 5% completion last week up to 11%. That’s also moderately faster than the prior five-year average of 6%.

Nearly all (98%) of this year’s spring wheat crop has now been planted, up from 94% a week ago and ahead of the prior five-year average of 95%. And emergence has reached 87% through Sunday, up from 72% in the prior week and favorable to the prior five-year average of 80%.

Spring wheat quality ratings jumped five points higher this past week, with 52% of the crop now in good-to-excellent condition. Another 42% of the crop is rated fair (down five points from last week), with the remaining 6% rated poor or very poor (unchanged from last week).
