Mike Pearson takes a look at proposed legislation in Nebraska regarding lab grown meat.

Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen has been vocal about banning lab grown meat in the state.

He is throwing his support behind Legislative bill 246.

Senator Barry DeKay introduced the bill to keep lab-grown meat from being manufactured, distributed or sold in Nebraska. The bill defines “cultivated food protein” and requires those products to be labeled “adulterated food products” under the Pure Food Act.  Adulterated food products would include decomposed products.

However, not all ag groups think that an all out ban should be placed on the lab grown meat.

Nebraska Cattlemen's Association has yet to take a position on the bill. One thing they want is clear labels.

Nebraska Farm Bureau stopped short of a n all right ban but also feel there should be a clear label on it.

Meanwhile, supporters think it's a proactive step to stop the lab grown meat from fill grocery aisles.

Nebraska is not alone, Florida banned it in 2024 and Alabama followed shortly after.

Texas and Missouri are focused on requiring clear labels for the products.
