USDA’s latest crop progress report, out Monday afternoon and covering the week through July 5, showed slightly lower quality ratings for soybeans, while corn ratings held steady. Winter wheat quality was also unchanged, with harvest passing the halfway mark this past week. And more than half of this season’s spring wheat crop is now headed.

Corn quality ratings were unchanged this past week, with 67% of the crop still rated in good-to-excellent condition through July 5. Another 25% of the crop is rated fair (steady from a week ago), with the remaining 8% rated poor or very poor.

Tennessee (82%), North Carolina (80%) and Texas (78%) continue to lead the charge in this category. And 3% of the crop is now at dough stage, versus the prior five-year average of 2%.

Soybean quality ratings shifted a point lower last week, with 64% of the crop now in good-to-excellent condition. Another 28% is rated fair (up one point from last week), with the remaining 8% rated poor or very poor (unchanged from last week). Minnesota (79%), Wisconsin (78%) and Kentucky (75%) have the highest good-to-excellent ratings among the top 18 production states.
