USDA’s latest crop progress report, out Monday afternoon and covering the week through July 12, showed corn and soybean quality fighting for small gains this past week. Spring wheat conditions also trended slightly higher. Winter wheat harvest is now two-thirds complete, but traders were expecting to see it moving a little faster, meantime.
Corn quality ratings moved from 67% in good-to-excellent condition a week ago up to 68% through Sunday. Analysts were expecting to see ratings hold steady, although individual trade guesses ranged between 65% and 68%. Another 24% of the crop is rated fair (down one point from last week), with the remaining 8% rated poor or very poor (unchanged from last week).
Physiologically, more than one-third of the crop (34%) is now silking, up from 16% a week ago and faster than the prior five-year average of 30%. And 6% of the crop has reached dough stage, up from 3% last week and slightly ahead of the prior five-year average of 5%.
Soybean quality ratings also tracked one point higher this past week, with 65% of the crop now in good-to-excellent condition. Analysts were expecting that number to remain unchanged, with individual trade guesses ranging between 62% and 65%. Another 27% of the crop is rated fair (down one point from last week), with the remaining 8% rated poor or very poor (unchanged from last week).
Physiologically, half of the crop is now blooming. That’s up from 34% a week ago and faster than both 2025’s pace of 45% and the prior five-year average of 44%. And 19% of the crop is now setting pods, up from 9% in the prior week. That’s also ahead of 2025’s pace of 14% and the prior five-year average of 13%.
The 2025-26 winter wheat harvest has reached 67% completion through July 12, up from 59% a week earlier. That’s ahead of both 2025’s pace of 62% and the prior five-year average of 61%. However, it was below the entire set of trade guesses, which ranged between 68% and 72%. USDA will no longer report on winter wheat quality ratings for this season’s crop.
Top-level spring wheat quality ratings improved another point this past week, with 58% of the crop now in good-to-excellent condition. Another 32% of the crop is rated fair (down four points from last week), with the remaining 10% rated poor or very poor (up three points from last week). Physiologically, 72% of the crop is now headed, up from 54% a week ago and mirroring the prior five-year average.
