AI and Our Future - The Conversation We Are All Having

The other day, I was riding in a rental car from San Diego to El Centro, California with Eric Snodgrass, (a.k.a. “Eric the Weather Guy” of Nutrien) and two agricultural lending professionals. The subject of AI or artificial intelligence and its implications for the future dominated our conversation.

The Numbers Tell the Story

First, some historical perspective on AI.  In 2018, compared to humans, AI’s IQ measured approximately 80. This jumped to 100 by the time COVID broke out. This past year? 124. By 2028 it is projected to hit 1200.

It is not just the level, it is how rapidly it is increasing and becoming a major theme at meetings I attend.

AI in Action: What We Are Already Seeing

I will admit, our team has been using various forms of AI for the past two years. It spurs creativity, and gives us fresh ways to look at information. In our Creamery, we have used it for brand image help and marketing ideas as we plan our 25th anniversary.

In agriculture, we see producers using AI for:

  • Sire selection
  • Fertilizer and crop application suggestions
  • Livestock management systems
  • And much more.

Eric indicated that he uses AI in his weather forecasting; four years of university research summarized in less than three hours. However, everyone in the car cautioned about false or wrong information that could come from AI.

The Workforce Reality Check

AI is now impacting the workforce, particularly white-collar workers.  Layoffs at Microsoft, Amazon and other large corporations are in the headlines more often and all facets of society will feel the impact.

The Glass Half-Full Approach

What are some suggestions for a strong and proactive position in utilizing AI?

People often use AI for group brainstorming. Think of it as an important player on your team, then filter and customize to fit your specific situation. As Tom Peters, the famous speaker and author, states, AI needs to be switched to IA (intelligence augmented). That is, you customize and humanize the AI output with your institutional memory and specific background.

Remember what John Naisbitt, author of Megatrends, suggested: the more high-tech, the more high touch needs to be incorporated.

Become a Lifelong Learner

Now, more than ever, lifelong learning needs to be a part of your gameplan. Take courses and tackle projects using AI.  Be aware that while good will come from these experiences, there can be a dark side. This all leads to your ability to think critically and solve problems. Learn to distinguish fake from real.

Master Collaboration

When all is said and done, three life skills are essential in the workforce:

  • Show up to work on time
  • Work well with people at all levels
  • Be prepared to follow or create directions

The Human Balance

Before the pendulum swings too far toward technology, people will seek a balance involving human touch and life experiences.
