Crop progress: Winter wheat quality on the rise

FPFF - Tue Nov 25, 6:46AM CST

The latest crop progress report from USDA, out Monday afternoon and covering the week through November 23, showed winter wheat quality ratings moving three points higher. The agency also noted that the 2025 corn harvest is nearly complete and is no longer reporting on soybean and spring wheat harvest progress.

Corn harvest moved from 91% completion a week ago up to 96% through Sunday. That’s a bit behind 2024’s pace of 100% and the prior five-year average of 97%. North Carolina (85%), Kentucky (88%) and North Dakota (89%) have the most progress to make at this time.

USDA also made updates to several regional crop harvests, including:

  • Cotton – 79% (up from 71% a week ago)
  • Sorghum – 91% (up from 82% a week ago)
  • Peanuts – 94% (up from 88% a week ago)
  • Sunflowers - 86% (up from 78% a week ago)

Meantime, almost all of the 2025-26 winter wheat crop is now in the ground, at 97% completion through November 23. That’s up from 92% in the prior week. It also mirrors both 2024’s pace and the prior five-year average.

Winter wheat emergence reached 87%, up from 79% in the prior week. That’s slightly behind 2024’s pace of 88% and the prior five-year average of 89%.

Quality ratings saw a three-point improvement, with 48% of the crop now in good-to-excellent condition. Another 35% is rated fair (down one point from last week), with the remaining 17% rated poor or very poor (down two points from last week). Among the top 18 production states, Oregon (65% G/E), North Carolina (62% G/E) and Nebraska (61% G/E) have the highest quality crops so far.

UDSA also issued the following announcement in today’s report: “Today’s publication is the last weekly Crop Progress report issued for the 2025 season. The first weekly report for 2026 will be released in early April 2026.”
