New trucks, engines showcase power and efficiency

The latest new trucks and engines for the ag equipment market emphasize improvements in fuel efficiency, power output and operational versatility. Volvo’s completely redesigned Version 4 semitruck achieves 8.5 mpg, representing a substantial improvement over previous 7.5-mpg models through aerodynamic enhancements and powertrain refinements.

Electric technology makes a strong showing with Chevrolet’s 2025 Silverado EV, delivering 760 hp and 785 pound-feet of torque while maintaining a 460-mile range and 12,500-pound towing capacity. The truck’s bidirectional charging capability can power a home for up to 21 days, addressing both work and emergency power needs.

Several redesigned engines, rather than incremental improvements, were showcased at this year’s Farm Progress Show. For example, Scania’s DC 13A Next Gen represents a ground-up rebuild featuring a single-cylinder head design and improved power density from 275 to 612 hp. Similarly, Yanmar’s 4.5-liter engine offers dual power configurations with advanced two-stage turbo technology for enhanced low-rpm torque delivery.

Specialized equipment continues evolving with Hiniker’s Daniels Dragon Plow, which doubles snow clearing width to 16 feet using rear-mounted technology previously limited to the Great Lakes region. Heavy-duty applications receive attention through Kenworth’s T880 and Volvo’s VNL 300, both emphasizing durability and operator comfort while meeting stringent emissions standards across global markets.
